You want to get healthier, exercise more, or lose weight, these are great outcome goals, however, focusing too much on the outcome without a system in place is going to get you frustrated and this is where setbacks occur. We see so many people start out with good intentions, however without a good system in place they never seem to reach their destination. While having an outcome goal does give you a target, it doesn’t address how you will get there.
Setting a goal to lose 20 or 30 or 50 pounds can be a great outcome goal, so let’s get out your calendar and circle a date that you would like to achieve this outcome, but remember the goal needs to be attainable…losing 50 pounds in 30 days is not attainable. Now you have circled your outcome goal date, what is the first thing you need to do? How are you going to stay on track? What happens when you get sick and tired of eating salads? How are you going to reach your outcome goal?
Choosing to lose 20, 30, or even 50 pounds can be overwhelming on your own, however, there is an easier way and it all starts with process goals. Process goals actually make it easier for you to achieve your desired outcome. For example, a process goal might be “I will not eat processed food, junk food, or sugar for the next 7 days. I will drink 8 glasses of water daily and will not eat food after 7:00 pm.” Process goals are helpful for weight loss because you focus on changing behaviors and habits that are necessary for losing weight.
Be willing to change your goals as you make progress in your weight-loss plan. If you started small and achieved success, you might be ready to take on larger challenges. Or you might find that you need to adjust your goals to better fit your new lifestyle.
